The Federal government defines a criminal record as any record of a felony arrest. A felony can be anything from accidentally receiving stolen property to first degree murder. But by the government’s definition, almost 75 million Americans are criminals, or at least have a criminal record—that’s one in three U.S. adults.

Likewise, the United States has the largest jail and prison population of any developed nation, a fact that should strongly reflect American attitudes on crime and punishment.

The point? Being involved in the criminal justice system is not rare or uncommon. If you’re facing criminal charges, hold your head high. Many millions of Americans find themselves facing a state’s attorney’s charge of grand jury indictment at some point in their lives; this fact does not make the accused any less innocent in the eyes of the law. This is not a determination of guilt, but an accusation. To avoid that accusation becoming a determination, though, the defendant needs skilled criminal counsel to help walk them through this trying time.
