There are many people in the Miami area who have been arrested at some point in their lives. Those living in the Miami-Dade area are no different than others around the country. In fact, it’s estimated by the National Institute of Justice that a third of all American adults have been arrested by the time they turn 23 years old. What many of these young adults didn’t realize is that those arrest records could haunt them for the rest of their lives, especially when it comes to getting hired at a job.

There are numerous outcomes that people may experience who get arrested. They may end up being found guilty of a misdemeanor or a felony, or their charges may even be dropped. Perhaps they arrested at the age of 21 for a DUI and at 40 they still feel that record is keeping them from getting hired. Once something goes on your criminal record it is usually there to stay. Unfortunately, any potential employer who does a background check will have access to the information, and many may use it as an excuse to not hire you, despite what you have done to make amends since the arrest.

So what should you do if you fear that a recent arrest may keep you from future employment, or if you have had a past arrest that you feel is doing the same? Here are a few tips to keep in mind regarding criminal records and jobs:

  • Most employers run some type of criminal background check today, especially if you will be applying for a professional or licensed position. They will see the arrest and/or conviction information on your record. It’s a good idea to be up front and honest regard the criminal record, and be ready to explain the situation.
  • Make sure that you have several good references that can vouch for that fact that you are a good candidate for the job. It helps if you have some that can offer information about your character so they can share how they feel you are of good moral character today.
  • Be truthful with everything you fill out on your application and in questions that you answer with the employer. If you have a criminal record they will find out anyway, so it’s better to establish a record of honesty from the start.
  • Work with an attorney to see what can be done to help you with the situation. There are laws in Florida that help to protect those who have a criminal record, so that it doesn’t ruin the rest of your life after you have paid our dues.
